These were SO good. Probably some of the best homemade scones I've had. The citrus flavor was perfect with all the sweetness from the sugar. I won't tell you how long they lasted at our house... because that would be embarrassing. And I can't even blame Spencer yet.
Orange & Poppy Scones
from Martha Stewart
2 1/2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling
1 T. baking powder
1/2 t. coarse salt
1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup plus 2 T. buttermilk
zest & juice of 1 orange
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 t. poppy seeds
Heat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With a pastry blender or your fingers, work the butter into the flour mixture. Add 1/2 cup buttermilk, orange zest, orange juice, egg yolk and poppy seeds with a fork until just combined.
Turn out dough and knead several times (add flour to your workspace if necessary). Form dough into a thick square. Cut the dough into 9 squares, then cut each square into triangles. Transfer the triangles onto a parchment lined cookie sheet. Brush the top with 2 T. buttermilk, then sprinkle some sugar on. Bake for 16-18 minutes, until pale golden.
Serve with butter when warm. Mmmm.
